Metal sealing rings
BSH sealing-M®

Our assemblies match each other perfectly

We help our customers with the assembly of metal sealing rings as a captive connection between the screw plug and metal seal. Both components are ideally matched in terms of material selection and properties. Screws are often used in combination with metal sealing rings in transmissions and engines, in oil sumps or the hydraulics. Our metal sealing rings are mainly made of aluminium, copper or soft iron. When tightening the screw plug, the relatively soft sealing ring is subject to plastic deformation, fills out any areas of unevenness or anomalies to create a reliable seal. The plastic deformation of the sealing ring requires a sufficiently high pre-tensioning force.

  • Like normal fasteners, the screw plug and sealing ring assembly allow automated assembly which, in turn, saves on scheduling work.
  • The design of the metal sealing rings is based on DIN 7603

Use cases

BSH Sealing-M®: Pre-assembly optimises operational processes

BSH Sealing-M®: Pre-assembly optimises operational processes

Bilstein & Siekermann® supplies screw plugs to an automobile manufacturer, who originally manually fitted a copper sealing ring to these screws before they were mounted in several places in the engine. Manual assembly on site proved to be highly prone to errors: Final inspections that were conducted several times a day showed that either the sealing ring was missing or two sealing rings had been inadvertently used, which led to considerable delays in production BSH sealing-M® solved this problem.

BSH Sealing-M®: Intelligent solution to the challenge of pressurisation

BSH Sealing-M®: Intelligent solution to the challenge of pressurisation

When the copper sealing ring is pre-assembled on to a screw plug, the sealing ring needs to be slightly deformed so that it cannot slip from the thread. This deformation strengthens the soft copper and increases the hardness of the material. The hardness then exceeds the limit of 45 HB according to DIN 7603. The harder sealing ring needs a higher tightening torque than a non-deformed, softer, sealing ring to achieve the same sealing effect. The customer tightens the screw plugs in a torque-controlled process and neither wishes to change the tightening process nor the torque; however, this means that the sealing rings cannot be sufficiently deformed. BSH has found a solution.

Your benefits

  1. BSH sealing-M® ensures that the metal sealing rings are captive pre-assembled
  2. Option of automated installation at the customer’s site
  3. The complex and error-prone manual final assembly stage at the application site is eliminated
  1. Metal sealing rings are more robust than elastomeric sealing rings and are resistant to most chemicals
  2. Possibility of free combinations of screw plugs and sealing ring materials
